Sie war preiswerter, ich brauchte keine zusätzliche Schnittstelle dafür (Glide) und die Unterstützung in Zeiten vor DirectX war schon von Anfang an relativ gut. Gerade unter anderem deswegen, weil OpenGL damals noch deutlich mehr unterstützt wurde, bevor Microsoft denen mit Windows95/98 und DirectX das Wasser abgrub.
